“Reflecting on the Language We Use” by Rosie Duivenbode

Available at: “ISLAMIC HORIZONS” (JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018 EDITION, PAGE 54)

Abstract: In this article Rosie Duivenbode advocates against using the loaded term “FGM”. She also challenges the slogan that “Islam has nothing to do with FGM”. She stresses the need for honest and open intra-community dialogue and systematic research into the practice of female circumcision. To do this, “we must use neutral terminology so as not to alienate and marginalize anyone”.

(Rosie Duivenbode, MD MSc., is a Dutch Muslim physician and clinical researcher currently residing in the UK. She is interested in Muslim patient care and Islamic bioethics.)
